1996 F1 world champion Damon Hill has backed Fernando Alonso’s future leadership of the F1 team. At the race’s late restart, Alonso dropped from third following being hit by Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz. Sainz ended up taking a five grid penalty. Various other accidents also occurred, and the race was immediately red-flagged.
Damon Hill has praised Fernando Alonso’s quick thinking and understanding of the rules at the F1 Australian Grand Prix. “Maybe we won’t finish a lap, so we’ll be back in the same position. It was the same at Silverstone,” Alonso said on the team radio. The race was restarted following the safety car and Alonso avoided crash damage to claim third place once more. Hill joked that Alonso might do well as a lawyer because of his knowledge of the sport. “We were joking that he should be a lawyer. I want him to be defended for murder!” Damon Hill said on the F1 Nation podcast. “He’s bored driving the car, so he needs to do something else. ‘Can we do the strategy too? Give me more information.’ “He already understands the rules. “If you’ve been in F1 for a long time and you’ve had all that experience, you’d think you’d learn something, but you can’t automatically assume that.” I likened it to the thinking of Michael Schumacher, who I had a relationship with. “He’s invested in this.
