Former editor-in-chief Matthias Schrom is leaving ORF

A year and a half ago, Schrom’s public chats from 2019 with ex-FPÖ leader Heinz-Christian Strache were fatal, causing him to resign from his position. He was most recently responsible for Smart Producing at ORF, but is now leaving the station at his own request.

Vienna. At that time, Schrom, as ORF 2 editor-in-chief, exchanged chats with Strache regarding the content of ORF reporting and the FPÖ’s personnel requests. More chats have recently caused a stir. In March, chats between the then FPÖ Vice-Chancellor and Thomas Prantner became known, who was then ORF’s deputy technology director responsible for the ORF’s online activities and has since left the public media company. Chats with Strache recently also had consequences for Philipp Jelinek (“Fit with Philipp”), who had asked Strache for help with a position at ORF and had offered insider information in return. His employment relationship was terminated by mutual agreement in April.
