Amsterdam: The former Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Driss van Aht, accompanied his wife Eugenie, who was suffering from illness, on his journey from this world. Both of them joined hands and accepted euthanasia on the 5th of this month. Both were 93 years old. Rights Forum, a pro-Palestinian organization founded by Fun Aht, released the euthanasia information of the couple.
From 1977 to 1982, the Prime Minister of the Netherlands was Catholic Fun Aht. He was the leader of the Christian Democratic Appeal Party and later became more left-wing. He left the party in 2017 over its stand on the Israel-Palestine issue.
He did not fully recover from the 2019 stroke. Rights Forum Director Gerard Yonkman said that Eugenie was also very weak and the two might not have separated from each other.
The Netherlands legalized euthanasia in 2002. According to the law, euthanasia can be done in six situations such as unbearable suffering and a condition where there is no possibility of recovery. There are also voluntary groups in the Netherlands that facilitate euthanasia with the help of doctors.
The number of partners euthanizing together has increased in the Netherlands since 2020. In 2022, 58 people were euthanized in this way. According to the organization Expertisecentrum Euthanasiae, 1,000 Dutch people are euthanized a year.
