The Ministry of the Interior (Mingob) reported that in the early hours of this Saturday, July 13, former deputy José Alberto Sánchez Guzmán, 39, was arrested for illegal transportation of a firearm.

According to the report from the 11th Precinct of the National Civil Police (PNC), the arrest of the former official took place at 9th Avenue and 14th Street, Zone 1 of the capital.

When agents proceeded to identify the vehicle P-771JRT, a red pickup truck, which was driven by Sánchez Guzmán, a pistol-type firearm was seized in the driver’s seat.

The brand of the weapon is Sig Sauer p938, black, with a brown wooden grip, serial number 52B188551, and inside a hopper containing five rounds of ammunition.

According to the PNC, when agents asked the former deputy for the firearms license issued by the General Directorate of Arms and Ammunition Control, he indicated that he did not have one.

“For this reason, he will be brought before the competent judge along with the vehicle and the confiscated firearm,” said the Ministry of Public Works.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office reported that at approximately 2 a.m., PNC agents who were conducting patrols located a vehicle that was badly parked, for which reason they proceeded to the corresponding inspection.

In the car they located José Alberto Sánchez Guzmán, who following carrying out the respective search was found to be carrying a firearm, for which he did not have the corresponding documentation.

The Metropolitan District Attorney’s Office was in charge of the case and estimated that he should be charged with the crime of illegal possession of a firearm.

Lack of merit is ruled

The former deputy was sent to the Court Tower, where the first statement hearing took place on Saturday followingnoon. The judge ruled that former deputy José Alberto Sánchez Guzmán lacked merit and ordered his immediate release.
