Former Defense Minister Kim Kwan-jin, who was charged with mobilizing military forces to work on comments and obstructing related investigations, was sentenced to two years in prison in a remand trial.
On the 18th, Criminal Divisions 1 and 2 of the Seoul High Court (presiding judges Kim Woo-jin, May Yong-joo, and Han Chang-hoon) ruled against former Minister Kim, who was charged with political involvement under the Military Criminal Act and abuse of authority under the Criminal Act.
Former Minister Kim was indicted in March 2018 for directing the Armed Forces Cyber Command to post about 9,000 posts and comments supporting the Lee Myung-bak government and the ruling party around the 2012 presidential election (political involvement).
The Ministry of National Defense launched an investigation in October 2013 when allegations of political involvement were raised.
Former Minister Kim was put on trial for charges of ignoring the investigation into interference in the presidential election through abuse of authority, for rejecting the plan to request an arrest warrant for the psychological warden, and for intervening in the announcement of interim investigation results.
The first trial judge pleaded guilty to most of the charges and sentenced former Minister Kim to two years and six months in prison in February 2019.
The appellate court overturned the charge of involvement in the interim investigation announcement in the first trial verdict as not guilty and sentenced him to two years and four months in prison in October of the following year.
Former Minister Kim was reviewed by the Court of Restitution and Repatriation as the charge of rejecting the plan to apply for an arrest warrant was overturned to the purpose of innocence at the appeal trial in October of last year.
