It has been learned that the man accused of a murder that occurred in Amami City, Kagoshima Prefecture in 2019, for whom the Kagoshima District Court had handed down a not guilty verdict and the prosecution was appealing, has died. As a result, the appeal hearing was discontinued.

According to multiple sources, the person who died was the former defendant, a 25-year-old man. A man was arrested and charged with breaking into a house in Amami City in 2019 and killing an elderly woman.

In the first instance jury trial, the prosecution asked for a sentence of 20 years in prison, but in November last year, the Kagoshima District Court acknowledged that “fingerprints and hair found at the crime scene belonged to a man,” but added, “It is not reasonable to conclude that he was murdered.” He passed a verdict of not guilty, saying,

A trial was scheduled to be held at the Miyazaki branch of the Fukuoka High Court following the prosecution filed an appeal citing a “mistake of fact,” but due to the man’s death, the high court decided to dismiss the prosecution on the 17th of this month, and the trial was discontinued.
