The information was given by the former player’s family, who stated that he died on Sunday (7), while sleeping, surrounded by his family.
“It is with deep sadness that we inform you that my husband and our father Franz Beckenbauer passed away peacefully yesterday, surrounded by his family.
We ask that we cry in silence and that you refrain from asking any questions,” the note says. The cause of death was not disclosed, but media outlets reported that the former player had been facing health problems in recent months, and his condition was stable.
He underwent two heart surgeries and lost sight in one of his eyes. Beckenbauer won the World Cup title twice: once as a player for the German national team, in 1974; another as coach, in 1990, when he won Germany’s third Italian Cup title.
The news of Beckenbauer’s death comes two days following the death of former coach and former player Mário Jorge Lobo Zagallo, one of the most important figures in the history of sport on Brazilian soil, became public.
Zagallo died last Saturday (6), aged 92. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva declared mourning for three days in honor of Zagallo.
Zagallo was a four-time champion for the Brazilian national football team, having participated in the victory as a player in the 1958 and 1962 World Cups, as a coach in the 1970 World Cup, and as a technical coordinator in the 1994 World Cup.
