Beijing: Former President Jiang Zemin (96), who led China’s economic boom, has died. Zem, who was president from 1993 to 2003, died at his residence in Shanghai. The official news agency Xinhua said the cause of death was leukemia and internal organ failure. During the reign of Jiang Zemin, China overtook Japan and Germany to become the world’s second largest economic power.
Hong Kong was brought under Chinese rule in 1997 and became a member of the World Trade Organization in 2001. Jiang Zemin became the General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party following the 1989 pro-democracy uprising was suppressed by the Tiananmen Square massacre.
