Former Chilean President, Michelle Bacheletexpressed on Wednesday its “deep concern” for Venezuela and called for complete transparency regarding the results of Sunday’s elections.
“Free and fair elections are a fundamental pillar of any democracy. It is imperative that the electoral process in Venezuela truly reflects the will of the people,” said the former socialist president (2006-2010 and 2014-2018) in a letter published on the social media of her foundation, Horizonte Ciudadano.
Bachelet, who served as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights between 2018 and 2022, said that “the publication and disclosure of all electoral records from all voting tables is essential, as an act of transparency and commitment to the truth.”
This is Bachelet’s second statement on the Venezuelan electoral process, after saying last Saturday, on the eve of the elections, that “the world expected the Venezuelan authorities to accept the results in a peaceful manner.”
