The Preobrazhensky District Court of Moscow sentenced the former chief doctor of the Matrosskaya Tishina pre-trial detention center, Alexander Kravchenko, to seven years in a general regime colony under articles of exceeding official powers and abuse of official powers, reports press service of the Moscow courts.

Po versions investigation, Kravchenko in 2020 contributed to the release of four convicts and four arrested, giving them diagnoses of serious illnesses, and also transferred one of the “authoritative” prisoners to hospital status without reason. The investigation claims that Kravchenko did this to “unload” the pre-trial detention center and was guided by “the desire to receive praise and encouragement from management.”

Lawyer Kravchenko Dmitry Roshchin indicatedthat a re-examination of the prisoners for whose illegal release the head physician was accused was not carried out. At the same time, he emphasized, a neurologist professor who testified in court confirmed the diagnosis of one of the prisoners.

The prosecution demanded nine years in a maximum security colony for Kravchenko. The doctor himself did not admit his guilt and claimed that he was fulfilling his professional duty, saving lives, and might not influence the placement of prisoners in any way.

Chief Kravchenko Halyna Tymchuk at the trial spoke in his defense, saying that he “proved himself to be a competent leader: he raised the status of the hospital, united the team and reduced the outflow of employees.”

Human rights activist Anna Karetnikova, who worked for regarding eight years in the FSIN system, believesthat Kravchenko “just did his job,” and no one was harmed by his actions and he had no selfish motive. “I just worked as a doctor, I was definitely not an angel. But he was convinced that medicine (and therefore the health and life of the prisoner) should not be dependent on the Internal Security Service and the FSB, and it is higher than many operational considerations,” wrote Karetnikova.

Alexander Kravchenko headed the branch of the FSIN medical unit located in Matrosskaya Tishina in 2019. In January 2022, Kravchenko was detained and sent to a pre-trial detention center. Initially, he was accused of receiving bribes from prisoners, but the investigation failed to prove a mercenary motive and the charge was reclassified.
