Lee Won-wook, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea (Chairman of the National Assembly Science, Technology, Information and Broadcasting), said on the 21st, “It is also possible to try enough to revise the Media Act and reduce the number of general programming channels to two (from the current four).”

Rep. Lee, who was running for the Democratic Party’s floor leader election, said this in an interview with News Tomato’s YouTube channel ‘Noh Young-hee’s News Inside’ this morning, referring to the media arbitration law pending in the National Assembly.

He said, “I strongly advocated passing the Media Arbitration Act at the general assembly of the House of Representatives at the time. The reason why it did not pass at that time was that the media unions, civic groups and foreign media organizations expressed their concerns, and there were concerns that the leadership might be turning the media too hostile ahead of the election,” he said.

He said, “I made several comments regarding TV Chosun (I criticize) during the election process. This is because of Kim Geon-hee, the spouse of President-elect Yoon Seok-yeol, and Kim Hye-kyung, the spouse of Lee Jae-myung, permanent adviser (reporting time difference). ‘I said, ‘Isn’t it a public relations agency, a representative of the people’s power’?” he said.

He continued, “The media law was forced to pass during the former President Lee Myung-bak’s reign and made a full-length film. Until then, the biggest principle of media management in Korea was the prohibition of both newspapers and broadcasters. The MB government made (the final episode) and it was actually a success,” he said.

He continued, “(The Conservative Party) has a key channel, but of course (the Democratic Party will soon become the opposition party), so I don’t know how much it can do.” We have to change the channel and let RTV also come in,” he insisted.
