Former Cal Football Players Soar in NFL Week 8: Five on First Place Teams!

Ten of the 11 former Cal football players on active NFL rosters were winners in their Week 8 matchups including five that are on teams atop or tied for first place in their NFL divisions as the league’s season nears the halfway point. The list of first-place Bears includes Jake Curhan (Seatte, NFC West), Jared Goff (Detroit, NFC North), Cameron Goode (Miami, AFC East), Cameron Jordan (New Orleans, NFC South) and Patrick Mekari (Baltimore, AFC North).

Five other former Cal players – Chris Brooks (Miami injured reserve), Austin Clark (Miami defensive line coach), Matt Giordano (New Orleans defensive assistant), Patrick Laird (Tampa Bay practice squad, NFC South) and Nikko Remigio (Kansas City injured reserve, AFC West – are also affiliated with squads in first or tied for first place.

Cal has a total of 24 former players currently affiliated with NFL teams including 11 on active rosters, eight on coaching staffs, four on injured reserve lists and one on a practice squad.

Keenan Allen – WR (Los Angeles Chargers, 3-4, No. 12 AFC Playoff Seed, 2nd AFC West)

– Recorded a team-high eight receptions for 69 yards in a 30-13 Week 8 home win over Chicago
– Eighth in the NFL with 643 yards receiving and tied for eighth with 54 receptions through Week 8
– Has 9,930 career receiving yards and is 70 shy of becoming the sixth active player with 10,000 or more

Bryan Anger – P (Dallas, 5-2, No. 5 NFC Playoff Seed, 2nd NFC East)

– Fourth in the NFL with a 51.0 yards per punt average (21 punts, 1071 yards) while his net of 45.1 yards per punt is third

Chris Brooks – RB (Miami, 6-2, No. 2 AFC Playoff Seed, 1st AFC East) … Injured Reserve

– Played in each of the first six games off the bench and on special teams before being injured in Game 6 and was placed on injured reserve Oct. 20
– Rushed 15 times for 94 yards with all of his carries coming in a 70-20 Week 3 win vs. Denver (9-66) and a 42-21 Week 6 victory over Carolina (6-28)

Camryn Bynum – S (Minnesota, 4-4, No. 7 NFC Playoff Seed, 2nd NFC North)

– Tied for fifth in the NFL with 76 tackles, while adding two interceptions, six pass defenses, one forced fumble, 0.5 sacks, 2 TFL and 1 QBH
– Named the NFC Defensive Player of the Week when he registered the first two-interception game of his career, was credited for a tackle on another San Francisco turnover among a team-high nine tackles in a 22-17 Week 7 home win over a 5-1 49ers’ squad
Week 9 (Sunday, Nov. 5, 10 am PT, FOX): and Atlanta (4-4)

Austin Clark – Defensive Line Coach (Miami, 6-2, No. 2 AFC Playoff Seed, 1st AFC East)

– Coached in a 31-17 Week 8 home win over New England
