The money you earned during your career is long gone. Gambling addiction, bad investments and the wrong friends led to savings dwindling and eventually eating them up completely.

The former star goalkeeper currently receives only 563 euros in social benefits per month. A sum that hardly seems compatible with the luxurious lifestyle associated with his previous career. Nevertheless, the everyday life of the former football hero reveals surprising facets.

In 2008, the former goalkeeper’s life took a turn when he was forced to declare personal bankruptcy. In the Sat.1 documentary “People talk regarding money”, which is also regarding the story of lottery millionaire Chico reported, Immel today gives insight into his everyday life, which, despite financial difficulties, still offers certain comforts.

He has set up a modest apartment in Stadtallendorf, his hometown in Hesse, which is furnished with donated furniture.

Eike Immel is already in despair regarding his washing machine

Although his income is limited, Eike Immel enjoys some luxurious benefits that are not really compatible with his low income. His home is cleaned every two weeks by two cleaners, a service that the 63-year-old would never do even in his career and which is financed by friends.

His friends also contribute to his daily restaurant visits, which cost him around 28 euros. “I have never mopped the floor in my entire life,” Immel admits in the documentary.

The kitchen in Immel’s apartment is sparse, and the former football star admits: “I can’t cook, I don’t even cook for myself” Even everyday tasks such as washing and cleaning are alien to him, and he admits that he doesn’t even know how he should operate a washing machine.

But the community where he volunteers to coach youth football is grateful. “Because he trains the youth and is committed,” he gets help, according to the landlord of a local restaurant. “I volunteer on the football field several times a week,” confirms Immel.

Despite generous support from those around him, there is little left at the end of the month: Immel only has 2.69 euros left. A situation that Eike wants to change: “My goal is to no longer receive resident’s allowance from the summer,” he explains with a view to the future.
