Former British cricketer Graeme Thorpe took his own life: wife reveals

Ex British Cricketer By Graeme Thorpe The wife And the children have revealed they took their own lives after suffering from ‘severe depression and anxiety’.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed on August 6 that Thorpe had died at the age of 55. The former Surrey batsman had been ill since May 2022.

His wife Amanda revealed that he tried to take his own life two years ago, he never recovered.

According to Akhbar Times, Amanda told her husband’s former partner in the cricket team, Michael Atherton, that Graeme had been suffering from severe depression and anxiety for the past few years.

‘Despite showing signs of hope for Graeme’s recovery, he continued to suffer from depression and anxiety which became severe at times. We helped him as a family and he treated himself with a number of treatments but unfortunately none of them really seemed to work.’

‘Graeme was known for being very mentally strong on the field and in very good physical health. But mental illness is a real illness and can be affected. Despite having a wife and two daughters whom he loved and cared for, his health did not improve. Recently he became very ill and truly believed that we would be better off without him and we are very saddened that he acted on his own way of thinking and ended his life.’

Following the events of May 2022, the current England cricket team wore shirts bearing his name as a tribute to the batting coach. The words ‘Thorpe 564’ were emblazoned on the shirt worn by Ben Stokes as he left the field for his first toss as captain.

Kitty, 22, one of Thorpe’s two daughters, added: ‘We’re not ashamed to talk about it. There is nothing to hide. This is not a matter of defamation. We first tried to help them to get healthy and tried to save them. That’s why we didn’t talk.’

‘Now is the time to share the news. However, this news is horrible. We wanted to be able to talk and share and now we want to spread awareness.’

Thorpe played exactly 100 Test matches for England and scored 16 centuries before retiring in 2005. He scored 6,744 runs at an average of 44.66. He was appointed England’s batting coach. He continued to serve in this position until 2022.
