After the opening of bankruptcy proceedings over the assets of Signa-Gründer René Benko In March, the first examination session at the regional court in Innsbruck began on Wednesday with a big surprise. Because René Benko actually appeared – contrary to all expectations personally in court. Now details from the courtroom have become public.

Assets in focus

The meeting was regarding what demands his creditors have on Benko and what assets he still has. So far, a total of 30 victims have asserted claims totaling around two billion euros in these insolvency proceedings. According to the creditors’ protection association KSV1870, a large part of the claims come from creditors Signa sub-companies.

Insolvency administrator Andreas Grabenweger has examined these claims in recent weeks and declared on Wednesday before the Innsbruck regional court that creditors’ claims amounting to around 47 million euros were recognized. However, the remaining registered claim amount of around 1.95 billion euros is disputed. According to the assessment of the Credit Protection Association of 1870, there is a possibility that the amount of the identified liabilities will change significantly during the course of these insolvency proceedings.

Benko remained silent in court

René Benko surprisingly appeared himself, accompanied by his lawyer Georg Eckert, to examine the registered claims before the Innsbruck regional court. He answered the questions that were asked of Benko, Benko himself remained silent, as “Bild” learned from an insider. The court hearing took place behind closed doors.

In response to questions from the court, Eckert stated that there were no vehicles or works of art in Benko’s possession. He also appears to be largely penniless in other ways: According to Puls24, Benko had already announced in advance that he was “dependent on his mother”. In advance, Benko had created a list of assets, which, according to the report, was supplemented several times. “It is not clear from this directory: What belongs to Benko, what belongs to his wife, and what belongs to his foundations,” the insider continued to “Bild”.

Where did the millions disappear to?

In court in Innsbruck it emerged that Benko not only earned between 200,000 and 300,000 euros annually as a “consultant” for Signa companies, but also double-digit million amounts in loans in recent years from the Signa group had received. He will have to explain in court where the money he has earned in recent years went.

On May 22nd he will have the opportunity to comment publicly for the first time on the wave of insolvencies at the Signa companies. On that day, Benko will appear as a witness before a parliamentary investigative committee, his lawyer told the German Press Agency. The committee is taking a close look at the alleged preferential treatment of large entrepreneurs like Benko by the conservative ÖVP chancellor party.
