Sam H., the former Belgian soldier arrested in Norway for death threats once morest Prime Minister Alexander De Croo, has been placed under an arrest warrant, the federal prosecutor’s office told us on Friday. The man will appear next Tuesday before the council chamber in Brussels, the same source said.
Sam H. posted a video on social media on July 7 where he was seen firing four shots at a photo of the Prime Minister. The Limburg prosecutor’s office, where the person resides, immediately opened an investigation, which has since been taken over by the federal prosecutor’s office. The police were aware that the man suffered from psychological problems while harboring sympathies for far-right ideas. A member of a biker gang, he had already had trouble with the law in the past.
As part of the threats allegedly made by Sam H. once morest Mr. De Croo, a European arrest warrant was issued by a Belgian investigating judge. The man was located in Norway and finally arrested in a shopping center in Oslo, where he had attracted attention because of an attitude deemed threatening. His home in Bourg-Léopold was also searched by the police but no weapon, ammunition or explosive was discovered there.
Norway handed over Sam H. to the Belgian judicial authorities on Thursday evening around 8:00 p.m. The facts are qualified at this stage as preparation for a terrorist offense as well as a threat to commit a terrorist offense, said the federal prosecutor’s office.
He was heard Friday by the federal judicial police (PJF) then by an investigating judge. This judge”considered that there were sufficiently serious indications of guilt and that his detention was necessary in the context of public security“, explained one of the spokespersons of the federal prosecutor’s office, Antoon Schotsaert. “The man is suspected of planning a terrorist act and threatening to commit a terrorist act“, he added.
