The federal prosecutor’s office requested the internment of the former Belgian soldier, Sam H., who was arrested following allegedly threatening the Prime Minister, Alexander De Croo. Last week, the matter was brought before the council chamber, but was postponed without a new date being set. According to the man’s defense, there were no plans to attack the Prime Minister or any other person.

On the morning of Friday July 7, Sam H. published a video on social networks in which he fired four bullets at a portrait of the Prime Minister, Alexander De Croo. The Limburg public prosecutor’s office then opened an investigation, which was quickly taken up by the federal prosecutor’s office. The latter had entrusted the case to an investigating judge specializing in terrorism cases. The authorities were aware that the man suffered from psychological problems while maintaining sympathies for the far right. A member of a motorcycle gang, he had already come into contact with the law in the past.

The ex-soldier was finally located in a shopping center in Oslo, Norway, and was arrested on the basis of a European arrest warrant. A careful search was also carried out at his home, located in Bourg-Léopold, in the province of Limburg. No weapons, ammunition or explosives were discovered there.

At the end of July, Sam H. was finally handed over to Belgium and placed under arrest warrant for threatening and preparing to commit a terrorist offense. Since then, the council chamber has continued to extend his detention. The investigation having now been completed, the federal prosecutor’s office has decided to request his internment. According to his lawyer, the video published by the ex-soldier was only an expression of frustration.
