Carles Puyol, a former colleague of Pep Guardiola in Barcelona, said that the current Manchester City coach is among the three best coaches of all time, before the Champions League final on Saturday, as Guardiola seeks to win the title for the third time in his career.
Puyol played with Guardiola in Barcelona and was captain of the club’s squad under the leadership of the Spanish coach several years later, winning the Champions League in 2008-2009 and 2010-2011.
“I played with Pep for two years and I really felt his leadership qualities in every aspect. The way he talks, his commitment to the club and his coaching abilities,” Puyol said.
He added, “For me, if not the best, then certainly among the best two or three coaches of all time.”
Puyol, who spent 15 years at Barcelona and won six La Liga titles in addition to three Champions League titles, said Guardiola was one of the best planners even when he was still a player under Dutch coach Louis van Gaal.
He continued, “Even with a coach like Van Gaal, whom I love very much, sometimes Pep would move us as a defender. He would turn us into three in the back, four in the back line sometimes. I vividly remember a match once morest Atletico Madrid and I was amazed with the way he plays especially.” Defensively.”
Guardiola has transformed Manchester City into a dominant force in English football since arriving there in 2016.
He has won five of the last six Premier League titles, and last Saturday City won the domestic double by beating Manchester United in the FA Cup final, their 11th title with the club.
On Saturday, City will face rivals Inter Milan in Istanbul, with a chance to match Manchester United’s 1999 treble.
