Former Angels manager Maddon: ‘Every team would consider signing’
Former Angels manager Joe Maddon has expressed his opinion on the possibility of trading Shohei Ohtani. He appeared on the US sports station “MLB Network” program “MLB Now”. “It’s hard to say, but if I can’t compete this year, next year, or the year following that, I have to trade him,” he said.
Moderator Brian Kenny had a discussion with Maddon, citing reports that Angels officials said, “There is a 0% chance that (Otani) will be traded.” Maddon said, “I didn’t have a particularly strong feeling regarding this (when I was enrolled), but I think the wind has changed. All teams will consider acquiring him. When he goes to the majors. And he was primarily interested in playing on the West Coast, but now that he’s Americanized and comfortable with the environment, rich teams will consider getting him.”
Continuing, “In order for the Angels to re-contract, we have to send an amazing year. We have to show (him) something strong until the trade deadline,” he also talks regarding the “conditions” for remaining. . The team has shied away from the playoffs in recent years, and Ohtani often speaks of his hopes for a winning team.
“Some people may object, but I don’t understand signing with someone else (in free agency) without a trade,” Maddon said. If Ohtani is traded, the Angels might acquire several key players. First of all, it will be interesting to see what kind of battle the team will show in the future toward the trade deadline of August 1st (Japan time 2nd).
