Former Ajax Amsterdam goalkeeper Edwin van der Sarwho suffered a brain haemorrhage nearly two weeks ago, has been released from intensive care and hopes to return home next week, he said.

The 52-year-old former Ajax and Manchester United player was vacationing on an island in Croatia when the incident took place. “I am happy to announce that I am no longer in the intensive care unit,” Van der Sar said on his Twitter account on Tuesday evening.

He also posted a photo of himself lying on his hospital bed, holding his wife Annemarie’s arms, the two flashing a smile.

Edwin van der Sar left his post as general manager of Ajax Amsterdam in May, which he had held since 2016, following the Amsterdam club’s worst season in 14 years, which ended in third place in the Dutch league behind Feyenoord Rotterdam and PSV Eindhoven. Considered one of the best goalkeepers of all time, Van der Sar played for Ajax between 1990 and 1999, winning the Champions League in 1995. He then won the C1 once more in 2008 with Manchester United following spells at Juventus Turin and Fulham.
