The formalization hearing of the general director of the Carabineros, Ricardo Yáñez, was rescheduled for next October 1 at 9 in the morning, initially set for this May 7 and which was the subject of various appeals for its suspension, which were not accepted by Justice.
The hearing was postponed by the Seventh Guarantee Court of Santiago at the request of the Prosecutor’s Office, which was confirmed by the national prosecutor, Ángel Valencia, who stated that the prosecutor’s request is based on the need to analyze the new antecedents that emerged in the investigation into the murder of the three police officers in Arauco.
Likewise, the court rescheduled the hearings of former generals Mario Rozas and Diego Olate, accused in the same case.
Yáñez will be formalized along with his predecessor in the Carabineros leadership, Mario Rozas, and former deputy director Diego Olate for the omissive crime of illegitimate coercion resulting in serious injuries and homicide, committed between October 2019 and March 31, 2020. , a time when the current police chief served as national director of Order and Security.
Government supports postponement
After the murder of three police officers in the Biobío Region, the Government came out this weekend to support the police chief.
The spokesperson minister, Camila Vallejo, considered the request for postponement a “prudent decision,” “it is a decision that does not suspend or disable the action of justice, it just understands – and it is common sense – that we have a different context than what that we had last week. Obviously it is an exception.”
“As I have previously stated, there is no room for a change in the leadership of the institution given the difficult moment it is going through,” he added.
