formal signing of Finland’s and Sweden’s invitation to NATO scheduled for Tuesday

AA / Madrid

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said the decision to invite Finland and Sweden to the Atlantic Alliance will be officially signed at the meeting of foreign ministers scheduled for next Tuesday.

This is what emerges from a press conference held this Thursday in the Spanish capital Madrid, at the end of the NATO summit.

Stoltenberg said that NATO will continue to support Ukraine, stressing that the Alliance is ready to counter any possible Russian action regarding Finland and Sweden’s NATO membership.

The Secretary General of the Atlantic Alliance said that in the event of a war between NATO and Russia, “we will face suffering, damage and death on an unprecedented scale”.

He added that Europe is going through a crisis and a war which are the biggest since the Second World War, even if they currently remain confined to the borders of Ukraine.

“We are facing the greatest global crisis in a decade, and as an alliance, we are working to prevent conflict and ensure peace and security for our citizens, and our goal is to prevent war by deterrence”.

Regarding the Ukrainian grain transport crisis, Stoltenberg said that “Turkey plays a very important role in the export of grain from Ukraine”.
