Dear friends:
Today’s Word relates two things that many of us would not relate: forgiveness and the healing of paralysis. What do they have to do with it?
In the Jewish mentality, illness was a consequence of sin. If one had an illness or paralysis, it was because he or his ancestors had done something bad. That is why Jesus applies a comprehensive healing: he forgives him and raises him from his prostration.
That is what Jesus comes to do: he wants to heal the root so that the entire tree is healthy; He wants to reconcile the heart, so that the whole person can rise.
All things considered, forgiveness and walking once more have a lot to do with each other. Because living divided, unreconciled, implies living prostrate, diminished, from the worst of oneself. And that shows. On the other hand, when one can reconcile what was broken, one can get back up and take life in one’s hands. Resentment paralyzes. Forgiveness lifts. That’s why Jesus does both.
Two thousand years later, Jesus is still able to heal those who approach Him. He is forgiveness that lifts up from prostration. The point is to get close… or get someone to get close to you – as in today’s gospel.
Lord Jesus,
you give us peace of heart.
Thank you for your forgiveness,
that reconciles what is broken in us.
With your forgiveness we can get up,
walk,
and help others walk.
