Forestrike is announced, a Kung-Fu roguelike in pixel art

Return Digital does it once more and presents us with a new and interesting indie game, and this time it is Forestrike, a Kung Fu roguelike with tactical features developed by the Japanese studio Skeleton Crew.

As with any roguelike, repetition and learning from your mistakes will be the key to success. The game is expected to launch in 2025 for Nintendo Switch and PC, but lucky BitSummit attendees will have the chance to try out an early demo of the game this weekend.

As a martial artist named Yu, you embark on a cross-country journey to free the Emperor from the influence of an evil admiral. Adopting techniques from one of five unique Masters, each battle presents a puzzle that you must solve using your mind and your fists.

Yu faces numerous enemies on his journey to the capital, always outnumbered. However, he possesses a secret weapon: Prediction, a meditative technique that allows him to visualize fights over and over once more until he finds a sequence of moves that will give him victory.

Once ready, our hero must fight in reality, where losing means starting over, but progress is permanent. Winning doesn’t always mean he’ll emerge unscathed from every encounter, but the further he travels, the stronger he becomes.

Main features of Forestrike:

  • Forewarned is forearmed: Prediction, a signature gameplay mechanic that allows players to experiment without consequence before fighting, and win or die trying. Forestrike’s roguelike gameplay loop always generates unique runs and encounters, so adaptation and improvisation are crucial to progress.
  • Visceral Kung Fu Combat: Always outnumbered, you learn to dispatch groups of brutal enemies with poise and efficiency using everything at your disposal. Upgrade and customize your move sets with techniques from your chosen Masters to help you outwit your opponents in fierce puzzle-like battles.
  • Handmade Fantasy: Journey through a visually stunning fantasy world, inhabited by unique characters, cruel enemies, and magical revelations. Intricate pixel art landscapes form an atmospheric backdrop for hand-crafted animations and characters.
