“I saw it from the mountain side while driving, and I thought it was a forest fire. The fire is getting bigger and bigger.”
Wildfires were also prevalent in the metropolitan area, with fires raging in the mountains near the prehistoric site in Yeoncheon, Gyeonggi-do.
In particular, tensions are rising in Yeongdong, Gangwon Province and the East Coast region.
This is because it is the peak season for high temperature and dry strong winds, called Yangganji winds, that blow between Yangyang and Ganseong in Gangwon-do.
As the direction of the valley of the Baekdudaegan Mountains formed in the southwest and the grain of the wind intersect, a typhoon-like strong wind may blow in the Yeongdong area momentarily.

“With high pressure in the south and low pressure in the north, the (wind) blew very strongly due to the large pressure difference. The strong wind will continue until noon tomorrow.”
The instantaneous wind speed in Misiryeong today was 120 km/h, Seoraksan 119 km, and Goseong 97 km/h.
Because of this, flights to and from Yangyang and Jeju were canceled one following another, and the Seoraksan Cable Car and the Sokcho Ferris Wheel were also abruptly suspended.
There were also reports from citizens who were concerned regarding the fall of the facility, such as that the building sign was likely to fall.
While strong wind warnings and dry warnings are in effect in the Gangwon region at the same time, the Korea Meteorological Administration has urged thorough embers management as even small embers can lead to large wildfires.
