A forest fire broke out on Saturday in the Saint-Joseph-de-Coleraine sector, about twenty kilometers from Thetford Mines. Dozens of firefighters battled the blaze for several hours.

The fire extended over a two-hectare area located at the corner of chemin de Vimy and route Chrétien, according to the director of the Fire Department of the Municipality of Saint-Joseph-de-Coleraine, Marco Côté .

“The fire started at an individual who burned forest residues while cleaning his land during the afternoon. He had extinguished the fire, but the wind carried embers into the woods and the sun reignited them,” he explains.

Firefighters from Disraeli and Thetford Mines came to lend a hand to their local colleagues to put out the fire. Director Côté finally declared the situation under control around 9 p.m.

The Society for the Protection of Forests against Fire (SOPFEU) was called in to help. Sûreté du Québec patrol officers also went to the site to manage traffic, while Vimy Road was closed to the public during the operation.

No spread was observed in the hours following the first call to firefighters. SOPFEU returned to the field the day after the events to analyze the scene.
