The fires in the forest near Jüterbog (Brandenburg) have now spread to 781 hectares. Villages are not in danger, but the flames are still raging. The federal police and armed forces also help to extinguish the fire.
DThe forest fire that broke out near Jüterbog around a week and a half ago remains a challenge for the emergency services. The situation had “dramatized, which is why the major damage situation was declared,” said a spokesman for the operations management of the Teltow-Fläming district on Friday evening. First, the RBB had reported.
Two Bundeswehr helicopters have also been in use since Saturday morning. Together with another federal police helicopter, they are currently supporting the extinguishing work at two fire sites, as the fire department’s operations manager, Silvio Ramlow, announced.
The Bundeswehr helicopters were deployed for the first time on Saturday. The federal police helicopter had already made numerous flights over the fire area in the Teltow-Fläming district in the past few days and dropped fire-fighting water. The fire brigade fears that the fire will flare up once more in the followingnoon due to the high temperatures and the announced east wind.
Due to the ammunition load in certain areas, the firefighters can only extinguish the fire from specially created paths that are constantly watered. There is a risk of explosion on the former military training area. Therefore, much had to be erased from the air.
In the event of a major disaster, there is an “oversized use of forces and resources,” said the spokesman. The size of the fire area now amounts to 718 hectares in the previous fire area. This includes areas that have already been burned as well as areas that are currently burning. But the following still applies: “Even by the new fire, no towns are threatened.” Ten hectares have been added in an area towards Frankenförde.
There are currently 100 emergency services and 18 fire engines on site, it said on Friday evening. Until now, the city of Jüterbog had been in charge of operations, but now the district of Teltow-Fläming is responsible due to the major damage.
Actually, the firefighters had hoped for a relaxation these days. But on Friday, a freshening wind fanned the fire once more. Numerous extinguished areas were on fire once more, said the head of the Jüterbog municipal regulatory office, Christiane Lindner-Klopsch, on Friday followingnoon. There has been a fire in the munitions-loaded area since May 31.
