What do the foreigners actually think? from us Swiss? A survey by 20 Minuten and Tamedia shows how people without a Swiss passport live in this country, what they like and what bothers them. The results show that many are bothered by the distanced nature of the Swiss. And other character traits are also displeasing.

Detached Swiss. 68 percent of foreigners find the Swiss distant. Accordingly, 60 percent of foreigners say it is not easy to find friends in Switzerland. The higher the level of education of the respondents, the more likely they are that it is difficult to make friends. For 44 percent of foreigners, detachment is one of the things which they like least in Switzerland. Also in this category are high rents and health insurance premiums.

Missing hugs. Ten percent of Swiss and 16 percent of foreigners mentioned this point. Around a third of foreigners also state that a lack of willingness to help and the ability to take criticism is something that bothers them.

Materialistic. The Swiss are apparently considered materialistic. According to the survey, almost 60 percent of foreigners see it that way. Only regarding a fifth of those surveyed described the Swiss as generous.

Boring and pedantic. 48 percent of foreigners think the Swiss are boring, and 52 percent also say they are pedantic. Only 21 percent of foreigners find the Swiss humorous.

Stress. Swiss are stressed – that’s what 62 percent of the Swiss and 55 percent of the foreigners surveyed say. Only a minority finds that the Swiss are relaxed.

Racism. 60 percent of foreigners think the Swiss are racist. The Swiss don’t judge themselves quite so harshly.

Gas, traffic jams, parking lots. When asked what annoys them the most in everyday life, almost a third of those surveyed without a Swiss passport ticked: Expensive petrol, Traffic jams on the streets and lack of parking.

fashion taste. 41 percent of foreigners think that the Swiss are not very stylishly dressed. They name Birkenstocks, backpacks for every occasion, outdoor clothing and white socks as the biggest fashion sins.

Despite all this: 85 percent of the foreigners surveyed like it in Switzerland. In particular, they value the beautiful landscape (69 percent), cleanliness (61 percent), safety (59), health care (49) and well-developed public transport (48).

People without a red passport also see positive things in the Swiss. 49 percent of foreigners rate the Swiss as polite or rather polite. Only 12 percent perceive them as arrogant.

From 24 October to 13 November 2022, 50,740 people from all over Switzerland took part in the survey by 20 Minuten and Tamedia on life in Switzerland. The survey also examined the views of the foreign population. The survey was available in German, Italian, French and English and was conducted in collaboration with LeeWas. LeeWas modeled the survey data on demographic variables. The margin of error is 0.7 percentage points.
