Foreigners killed and missing since the Hamas attack on southern Israel
Many foreigners have been killed, injured, or taken hostage by Hamas since the movement’s October 7 attack on Israel.
Since then, more than 1,400 people have been killed on the Israeli side, according to the authorities, while Hamas fighters have taken at least 224 people hostage.
Hamas also announced that the ongoing Israeli bombing of the Gaza Strip led to the killing of “about 50” hostages it captured in its attack on Israel. The Israeli authorities did not confirm this number.
The Israeli army responded with intense and continuous bombardment on the Gaza Strip, killing more than 7,000 people, most of them civilians, including about 3,000 children, according to a tally announced by the Ministry of Health of the Hamas government.
According to a count by Agence France-Presse, about 200 foreign citizens were killed, many of whom also held Israeli citizenship.
Here are the numbers known so far:
– The United States: At least 31 dead, 13 missing, and hostages – At least 31 Americans were killed, according to what the White House announced (Wednesday), without clarifying the circumstances of their deaths, while 13 American citizens are still missing, according to the American authorities.
President Joe Biden announced that there are Americans among those “detained by Hamas,” which released an American woman and her daughter last week.

– Ukraine: 21 dead and one missing – 21 Ukrainians were killed, according to a new toll announced by Kiev (Thursday), indicating that there is one missing person.
– Nepal: 10 dead and one missing – 10 Nepalis were killed, according to what the Nepalese embassy in Tel Aviv reported, “while contact was lost” with another Nepali.
There were 265 Nepalese students in Israel, 17 of whom were residing in Kibbutz Alumim (south), which was targeted by the Hamas attack.
– Argentina: 9 dead and 21 missing – Argentina confirmed the killing of 9 of its citizens, adding that the number of missing people had risen to 21 people. Among them are two brothers, Iyar and Eitan Horn, according to their father.
– United Kingdom: At least 12 dead and 5 missing – At least 12 Britons were killed while 5 others are still missing, according to a new toll announced by London.
– Canada: 7 dead and 2 missing – The Canadian government announced the death of a seventh Canadian. Two are still missing.
– Portugal: 4 dead and 4 missing – Lisbon announced that 4 Portuguese-Israelis were killed and 4 others were missing.
– China: 4 dead and 2 missing – Beijing announced (Monday) that 4 Chinese were killed and two were missing.
– Philippines: 4 dead and 2 missing – The Philippine government announced the killing of 4 of its citizens, including a 33-year-old woman and a 42-year-old man, in an attack on a kibbutz near the border with Gaza, and a 49-year-old woman who was participating in the music festival.
Two Filipinos are still missing.
– Romania: 5 dead and one missing – Romania announced that 5 of its citizens were killed, including an Israeli-Romanian soldier, while another Romanian was kidnapped.
– Austria: 4 dead and 1 missing – 4 Austrian-Israelis were killed, according to the authorities, and one person is still missing.
– Belarus: 3 dead and one missing – The Belarusian embassy in Tel Aviv announced (Thursday) that 3 of its citizens were killed and a fourth person was missing.
– Brazil: 3 killed – An Israeli-Brazilian man and woman, and a Brazilian woman, were killed in a Hamas attack.
Michel Nissenbaum, a 59-year-old Brazilian-Israeli, is still missing.
– Peru: 3 dead – The Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the killing of 3 Peruvian citizens.
– Uruguay: One hostage – Uruguay confirmed the kidnapping of Shani Goren, a 29-year-old Israeli-Uruguayan, in Kibbutz Nir Oz.
– South Africa: Two dead – The South African government announced the killing of two of its citizens.
– Italy: 3 dead – The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the killing of 3 of its citizens, two 60-year-old citizens, in addition to another citizen (29 years old) who was present at the music festival at the time of the Hamas attack.
– Chile: One dead and one missing – The authorities announced the killing of a Chilean woman and the loss of another resident of Kibbutz Kissufim.
– Turkey: One dead and one missing – Ankara announced the killing of a Turkish-Israeli who has lived with his family in Israel since 1972 and the loss of another.
– Spain: dead and hostage – A Spanish woman who also held Israeli citizenship was killed, while a Spaniard from the Basque region who was married to a Chilean woman was taken hostage, according to Madrid.
– Colombia: One dead and one missing – Colombia announced that one of its citizens was killed and another was missing.
– Cambodia: One dead – Phnom Penh confirmed the death of a Cambodian student.
– Australia: Dead – Australia announced the killing of an Australian citizen.
– Honduras: One killed – Honduran authorities confirmed the death of one of their nationals.
– Azerbaijan: killed – An Azerbaijani was killed, according to Baku.
– Switzerland: One killed – An Israeli-Swiss citizen aged about 70 who had lived in Israel since 2004 was killed, according to the Swiss government.
– Ireland: Dead – Dublin confirmed the killing of a 22-year-old Irish-Israeli woman.
– Mexico: Two hostages – Mexico reported that two of its nationals, a French-Mexican man (32 years old) and an Israeli-Mexican woman (30 years old), are being detained.
