Foreign Ministry condemns Knesset efforts to target UNRWA and disrupt its work

Ramallah, October 6, 2024, WAFA-The Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the approval by the so-called Foreign Affairs and Security Committee of the Israeli Knesset of a law targeting UNRWA, disrupting its work for Palestinian refugees and depriving him of the service he provides through a UN agency.

In a statement released this Sunday, the ministry considered that this project constitutes a blatant attack against the United Nations and its agencies and is part of the war of occupation against our people and their rights, in particular the right to return of refugees in accordance with Resolution 194. It is also an extension of the crimes and violations committed by the occupying State against UNRWA, its institutions and individuals and its schools.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has called for urgent international intervention to stop the application of this law and put an end to its implementation.

For its part, the Jordanian Foreign Ministry condemned efforts by the Israeli Knesset to ban the activities of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) in Israel.

The ministry’s official spokesperson, Sufyan Al-Qudah, said these attempts, which come after the Knesset previously classified the agency as a terrorist organization, represent a systematic targeting of UNRWA and its vital role in provision of humanitarian services to Palestinian refugees, and reflect Israeli policy to politically assassinate the agency and obstruct its work.

He continued: “These Israeli attempts are illegal and invalid practices, and constitute a blatant violation of international law and Israel’s obligations as the occupying power,” stressing that attempts to systematically target the agency that asserts Palestinian refugees’ right to return and compensation, in accordance with international law, are doomed to failure.

Al-Qudah, highlighted the importance of the mandate granted to UNRWA within the framework of the United Nations mandate, stressing the need for the international community to continue to provide support to the agency and for it to continue to assume its indispensable responsibilities in providing vital services to Palestinian refugees.
