Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono was officially appointed by President Prabowo Subianto at the State Palace, Jakarta, Monday (21/10/2024).
International Relations lecturer at the University of Indonesia, Broto Wardoyo, said that Sugiono’s appointment as foreign minister, even though he was not a diplomat, was not too much of a problem.
According to him, Sugiono, who has a background as a Gerindra politician, even though he has no experience as a diplomat, has knowledge of foreign relations because he has served in Commission I of the DPR.
“He’s in Commission I (DPR), so he understands the content because Commission I is one of its affairs is international relations. If we talk about platform, content, direction (policy), he definitely understands, it’s just a matter of what the practice will be like,” said Broto when contacted.
Sugiono became Minister of Foreign Affairs who was not a career diplomat. The last time Indonesia had a non-diplomat Foreign Minister was Alwi Shihab in the era of President Gus Dur.
At the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Sugiono will be accompanied by three deputy ministers, namely two diplomats Arrmanatha Nasir and Arif Havas Oegroseno and one politician Anis Matta. According to Broto, the presence of deputy ministers will be very helpful.
“The existence of two deputy ministers with career diplomat backgrounds should help. In other countries it is true that the foreign minister plays a (big) role but the assistant secretary also plays a role. I think in that context it is not too problematic,” he said.
“The most important thing is that Mr. Sugiono can quickly enter the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which is a large organization complete with representatives in various countries. How can he enter and work together? After all, in Mr. Alwi’s (Shihab) era, we were there too and there were no problems,” he concluded. .

Foreign Minister Sugiono is a Gerindra Party politician who has a military background and is known as a Prabowo loyalist.
He was born in Takengon, Aceh, on February 11 1979. In the military, his last rank was first lieutenant and then retired early.
Sugioni studied primary and secondary education in Aceh then became a cadet at Taruna Nusantara High School Magelang and graduated in 1997.
After that, he continued his undergraduate studies at a special military campus in the United States, namely Norwich University, and graduated in 2001. Sugiono then graduated from Military Academy and was appointed as a TNI Army officer in 2002.
After that, he resigned from the military and became Prabowo’s personal secretary and joined the Gerindra Party. His last position in the party was as deputy general chairman.
In the 2019-2024 period, he was a member of the DPR in Commission I which is also in charge of foreign affairs. (Dhk/P-3)
