Foreign Minister of Libya suspended for meeting with Israeli counterpart

After meeting with Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen, the head of the Libyan National Coalition Government has suspended Foreign Minister Najla Manqoosh.

According to the international news agency, the investigation against Foreign Minister Najla Manqoosh has been started on Sunday. Last week, the Israeli Foreign Minister said that he had a secret meeting with the Libyan Foreign Minister in Italy.

Prime Minister Abdul Hameed Diba has ordered the suspension of the Foreign Minister, while the Presidential Council has asked for an explanation on the meeting of the Foreign Minister. In a statement issued by the prime minister on Facebook, he added that the foreign minister had been suspended “temporarily” and that a commission from the Ministry of Justice would “conduct an administrative inquiry” against him.

The Supreme Council of State, which plays a consultative role in Libyan politics, has also expressed its ‘surprise’ at the foreign minister’s visit and called for ‘those responsible to be held accountable.’

On the meeting, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Libya has explained that Najla Manqoosh had rejected the meeting with the representatives of Israel and it was not an official meeting. In the statement, the Libyan Foreign Ministry accused Israel of trying to present it as ‘a meeting or negotiation’.

The statement said there was no discussion, agreement or consultation in the conversation. In the statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has once again completely rejected normal relations with Israel.

According to the American news agency, this was the first meeting between the foreign ministers of the two countries.
