Foreign Minister Hadja Lahbib Targeted by Motions: Calls for Resignation

Foreign Minister Hadja Lahbib (MR) is targeted by several motions, aimed at obtaining her resignation.

N-VA group leader Peter De Roover has submitted a motion calling for Hadja Lahbib to resign for “lying”. The Vlaams Belang also tabled a motion calling for the resignation of the Minister for Foreign Affairs, but also of Alexander De Croo, Prime Minister.

Challenge also plans to table a motion of no confidence this Thursday, while the Committed are also pleading for the resignation of the minister.

The rest will depend on the standoff that will open between the MR on one side, the PS and Ecolo on the other.

Malik Ben Achour: “Following the decisions of Hadja Lahbib, there are people who are in danger”

The Open VLD, however, took the initiative on Wednesday evening to file a pure and simple motion. Traditionally, these outright motions are used by the majority, as in the Sarah Schlitz (Ecolo) case, to evacuate opposition motions. In practice, if the majority votes for this simple motion, the opposition motions of no confidence disappear from the agenda.

Significant downside: the text of the Open VLD has so far only been co-signed by the MR… The PS and Ecolo, according to our information, have not voted on the text, which will therefore a priori not have the majority.

Then there is the question of the motion of no confidence of the N-VA. However, this text can only be voted on and debated for a minimum of 48 hours following it has been tabled. Unless urgency is requested, and validated, by a majority. However, there once more, such a request has not yet been submitted. And the PS also does not intend to speak out in favor of urgency, total clarity not having been achieved on this file.

The story is the same at Ecolo. “At this stage, we still have many questions and therefore need answers before voting next week,” says Gilles Vanden Burre, Ecolo/Groen group leader.

In other words, it is unlikely, unless there is a reversal, that a vote will take place this Thursday.

A possible vote next week

If a vote were to take place, it would not take place until next week. Motions also block interpellations and topical questions in plenary sittings.

However, discussions will take place this followingnoon in plenary session on the subject. The Prime Minister will respond to questions from Défi, Vlaams Belang and the PTB on trust between government partners, while the N-VA and the Engagés will question the country’s international image. The majority partners, however, will stay away from this debate, as will Hadja Lahbib…

But it is in any case generally not on this motion that the fate of the Minister will be decided. The departure of a member of the government is rarely decided in practice by a vote. It will depend more on the position of the PS and Ecolo: are they ready to make this Iranian affair a question of government, at the risk of leading to its downfall? Phones get hot. The situation is very uncertain.
