Foreign Minister Gil accuses the US of “putting pressure” on the region to change the election result

Venezuela on Monday accused the United States of pressuring governments in the region to “promote a change” in the result of the July 28 presidential elections, after the State Department reported that it maintains “close contact” with Brazil, Mexico and Colombia to “find a way forward” following the questionable victory of Nicolás Maduro.

«Washington is trying to put pressure on the governments of the region to promote a change in the electoral result based on information constructed by CIA agents and magnates of the corporate communications and social media monopolies.“, said the Government of Venezuela through a statement shared on X by its foreign minister, Yván Gil.

He also condemned the statements made by State Department spokesman Matthew Miller, who confirmed that, for the United States, the winner of the Venezuelan presidential election is Edmundo González Urrutia.

For the Executive, these statements make it “evident” that the United States “He is at the forefront of the attempted coup d’état» y «ignores the democratic will of the Venezuelan people who re-elected President Nicolás Maduro«.

He also accused the United States of trying to “impose” a “new puppet government, in the image and likeness of its failed 2019 strategy,” referring to the period in which opposition leader Juan Guaidó proclaimed himself “president in charge” of Venezuela, which had the support of Washington.

The United States clarified on Monday that, although it recognizes González Urrutia as the winner of the elections, it still does not recognize him as president of the country, and called on Chavismo and the opposition to negotiate a democratic transition.

For their part, Presidents Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (Brazil), Gustavo Petro (Colombia) and Andrés Manuel López Obrador (Mexico) have been more cautious and asked the National Electoral Council (CNE), in a joint statement, to make the voting records public and to verify the results.

On Monday, the CNE delivered the vote counting records to the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ), which will review the result, by which Maduro was declared the winner.

The electoral body has not published the minutes certifying Maduro’s victory, as required by law, while the Democratic Unitary Platform released “81%” of these documents, which show, according to the opposition, that González Urrutia won by a wide margin, sparking protests in the country that have left at least 13 dead and more than 2,000 arrested.
