Annalena Baerbock makes a funny slip of the tongue in a speech in English in South Africa. Shortly therefollowing, she gets confused once more.

Pretoria/Munich – On Tuesday (June 27) the Federal Foreign Minister was there Annalena Baerbock in South Africa to exchange ideas with her counterpart Naledi Pandor within the framework of the German-South African Binational Commission. The 42-year-old also gave a speech in the capital, Pretoria, which turned out to be a minor fiasco.

A few days later, a post on Twitter suddenly caused a stir. It shows an excerpt of a speech by Baerbock and is just nine seconds long. In English she says greens-Politician: “South Africa’s path of freedom has been a bacon of hope inspiring men and women around the world.” It is clear to understand that she says “bacon of hope”, which in German means “bacon of hope”.

Annalena Baerbock speaks of “bacon of hope” in her speech, but probably meant “glimmer of hope”

Baerbock, who shortened her trip to South Africa at short notice, would almost certainly have wanted to say “beacon of hope”, which would have fitted the context. Because “beacon of hope” (pronounced: “bend”) literally means “beacon of hope”. More freely translated, one can also say “glimmer of hope” or “spark of hope”. It is not Baerbock’s first faux pas in connection with South Africa. In January, a tweet from the Federal Foreign Office with a leopard joke had angered Africans.

Baerbock gets plenty of ridicule for this amusing blunder. “Well, who doesn’t know him, the ‘ham of hope’,” writes one and provides his answer with a tearful laughing emoji. “Cool. That’s official now. The path of freedom is made of bacon.
If a green man with a ban on meat comes around the corner, he’s definitely not interested in freedom!!!” Another comment says mockingly.

Baerbock tumbles in speech once more unfavorable

A user has considered a particularly malicious comment. He wrote “They reacted immediately in the Baerbock fan shop” and shared pictures with fan articles, for example on a T-shirt. Bacon is pictured on it, with “bacon of hope” underneath. Another user wrote in English “Yes, she studied German as a second foreign language in London”, which was probably meant as a tip to her studies in the British capital.

Incidentally, as the speech continued, Baerbock got bogged down once more. When she said “We support the AU in its bid to join the G20” (English: “We support the African Union in their efforts to join the G20”), the Foreign Minister pronounced “bid” unfavorably. It sounded like “bitch”. In German it actually means “bitch”, but it is also used as a swear word (“bitch”). US President Joe Biden also made a slip of the tongue in a recent speech. (mt)
