The first live use of weapons by the frigate “Hessen” in the Red Sea was successful. On Tuesday evening two enemy air targets were attacked. Another drone could not be shot down previously. In retrospect it turned out that it was not a hostile one.

The Bundeswehr frigate “Hessen” unknowingly shot at a drone belonging to an allied country during its operation in the Red Sea. Defense Ministry spokesman Michael Stempfle reported on Wednesday that the German warship had already spotted a drone in the operational area on Monday that could not initially be assigned to any of the allied nations. The “Hesse” then tried to shoot down this drone, but was unsuccessful. “The case was resolved in that it was not a hostile drone, which only became clear afterwards.”

Stempfle did not say which country this drone was subsequently assigned to. However, he expressly emphasized that before the bombardment, the “Hesse” had asked all allied nations, in which no country had reported its own drone in the area of operation. Only later did it turn out that it was an unreported drone. It is well known that there are US combat drones in the region that have nothing to do with the operation in the Red Sea.

The “Hessen” has been involved in the EU operation to protect merchant ships in the Red Sea since Friday.

The operation, which began on Friday, is considered the Navy’s most dangerous mission in the history of the Bundeswehr. The Houthi militia, allied with Iran, wants to force an end to the Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip by shelling merchant ships in the Red Sea. The Israeli military operation is a response to the terrorist attack by the Islamist Hamas on October 7th.

The sea route through the Red Sea and the Suez Canal is one of the most important trade routes in the world. Because of the attacks by the Houthis, who are armed by Iran, large shipping companies are increasingly avoiding the shortest sea connection between Asia and Europe – with significant effects on the global economy.
