“Foreign domestic helper shortage” employers rush to 6,500 yuan

The epidemic situation in the Philippines and Indonesia has slowed down, and the problem of “foreign domestic helper shortage” is expected to be gradually resolved. The chairman of the Hong Kong Employment Agents Association, Zhang Jiemin, said in a radio program this morning (10th) that the supply of foreign domestic helpers in Hong Kong is still tight, and the current employment salary has risen to 6,000 to 6,500 Hong Kong dollars. He expects at least 5,000 to 10,000 additional helpers to arrive in Hong Kong before the monthly salary has a chance to fall back to the statutory HK$4,630. He also believes that the authorities should cancel the flight circuit breaker mechanism and the choice of non-government-designated quarantine hotels to facilitate employers to take care of and contact foreign domestic helpers in Hong Kong.

Chen Dongfeng, chairman of the Hong Kong Employment Association, said that there were no flights from the Philippines and Indonesia that triggered the circuit breaker mechanism last month. Currently, regarding 16,000 foreign domestic helpers are waiting to come to Hong Kong. However, the number of quarantine hotel rooms is limited, and it is expected that foreign domestic helpers waiting to come to Hong Kong will make an appointment 3 months to arrive in batches. He suggested that the government consider conditions to shorten the quarantine days for foreign domestic helpers in Hong Kong to 3 to 4 days, so as to free up more quarantine hotel rooms to meet the demand.
