Foreign Direct Investment in Vietnam: A Positive Outlook for the Economy

Foreign direct investment reached 13.43 billion USD in the first half

According to the General Statistics Office, from January 1 to June 20, the total amount of foreign direct investment (FDI) registered in Vietnam reached 13.43 billion USD, down 4.3 percent year on year. However, in the context of general difficulties in global investment flows, this is then a positive element for the Vietnamese economy.

On the amount, the new funds amounted to 6.49 billion USD (+31.3%) and are distributed in 1,293 projects (+71.9%).

Regarding additional investments, 632 projects in operation increased their investment by 2.93 billion USD (-57.1%).

Share capital contributions and purchases of shares by foreign investors amounted to 4.01 billion USD (+76.8%).

In the first half of the year, Singapore ranked first among the 57 countries and territories with new projects authorized in Vietnam, with an amount of 1.79 billion USD, ahead of China (1.29 billion USD) and Japan (386 million USD).

From January to June, the disbursement of FDI reached 10.02 billion USD, an increase of 0.5% in annual variation.

With high expectations to attract FDI in 2023, Director of the Foreign Investment Agency (FIA) of the Ministry of Planning and Investment, Dô Nhât Hoàng, said that in the coming times, Vietnam continue to improve the investment environment, with emphasis on the reform of administrative procedures; and create policies to attract investment in a number of potential areas such as high technology, semiconductors, innovation, etc.
