Forced evacuation ordered in eastern Ukraine

Ukrainian authorities have ordered the evacuation of the strategically important city of Kupyansk and three other towns in the northeastern Kharkiv region. The reasons were the advance of Russian troops and difficulties in supplying the population in winter, explained the governor of the Kharkiv region, Oleh Syniehubow. The evacuation is mandatory. The Ukrainian military command reported 19 battles near Kupiansk in the last 24 hours.

“The situation is most difficult in the Kupyansk sector. On the eastern side of the Oskil River, we can no longer guarantee the restoration of electricity, heat and water supplies due to constant shelling,” Syniehubov said. “All repair crews immediately come under Russian fire.”

Around 7,000 residents are to be accommodated in evacuation centers in Kharkiv. Meanwhile, Russian forces reported territorial gains in the east, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said his troops were holding their positions.
