SSI and SSDI from Social Security
SSDI was created specifically for those with an illness or disability, so they can access the benefit for at least one year.
To qualify for this program, applicants must have paid their taxes and met certain years of prior work experience.
Reasons to lose your benefits
If you are a Social Security beneficiary, it is important that you know each of the clauses stipulated by the SSA and stay informed of any possible changes.
SSI recipients may lose access to their monthly payments when they find paid work. It all depends on the amount of your salary.
Eligibility for the program applies if you earn $1,971 or less per month. If you exceed that income amount, you would no longer qualify for the payment.

SSDI recipients can return to work for up to nine months without losing their benefits.
However, following that period, if they receive income equal to or greater than $1,550 per month, the agency will consider the amounts of remuneration they receive and will proceed to suspend the benefits.
Other reasons for losing SSI and SSDI
- If you are in jail for more than 30 days.
- If you are recently divorced or planning to do so soon.
Between 2023 and 2024, more than 100,000 people were removed from SSI, although the reasons are unknown. SSA data indicated that the number of people enrolled in the program went from 7,380,737 to 7,261,342.
It has also been detailed that, in terms of states, there are some that have up to more than 15,000 members removed from the SSI.

California is the state with the most people removed from SSI between 2023 and 2024, with a total of 18,344 residents no longer receiving payments and leaving the system.
Texas, on the other hand, has a total of 14,587 citizens removed from the SSA. New York follows with 9,555 citizens who left the SSI program.
