US President Joe Biden’s administration said Thursday that for the first time, the White House will pay its interns, in a change aimed at making its internship program available to lower-income students.
“Too often, unpaid federal internships have served as a barrier to hardworking, talented, and professional students, preventing them from demonstrating their skills and talents and deterring them from professional development opportunities at the federal level,” the White House said in a statement.
The White House added that the first paid internship programs will begin in the fall for a period of 14 weeks, for which trainees will receive $ 750 per week in two installments.
The White House indicated that the salaries that will be paid to them will come from amounts already approved by Congress this year.
Trainees are deployed in several places of employment in Washington, where they are offered positions in the public and private sectors free of charge as an educational opportunity. Being on an internship program can usually be a first step to getting a job.
