For the first time, microplastics found in the blood

Tiny pieces of plastic less than 5mm in diameter have been found in human blood for the first time.

It is a discovery that raises questions. For the first time, traces of microplastics have been found in human blood samples. A worrying presence since these particles might very well be transported in the blood and lodge near certain organs.

This discovery, relayed by the Guardian, was made by Dutch researchers when collecting blood samples from 22 healthy anonymous adult donors. In total, the blood of 17 of the volunteers – or 77.2% of the panel – contained microplastics. What is it regarding ? They are tiny pieces of plastic less than 5mm in diameter.

A “revolutionary result”

In previous studies, microplastics have already been found in the brain, intestines, placenta of unborn babies and feces of adults and infants but never before in blood samples. For the moment, scientists are still trying to determine the effect of ingesting these tiny particles on the body.

“Our study is the first evidence that we do have polymer particles in our blood – it’s a groundbreaking result. But we need to expand the research and increase the sample sizes, the number of polymers evaluated, etc.” author of the study, Professor Dick Vethaak of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in the Netherlands interviewed by the Guardian. These findings were published in the journal Environment International.
