Rabat – Morocco announced on Friday the manufacture of the first “hybrid” car in the city of Tangier (north), for the first time in the country’s history.

This came in a speech by the Minister of Industry, Riyad Mezzour, in a post published by the Ministry of Industry, via the “X” platform.

A hybrid car uses more than one energy source and combines a conventional fuel engine (petrol or diesel) with an electric motor.

Mazor said that his country “will manufacture 200 cars of this type daily to target the domestic and European markets.”

He described this step as “important for the country’s automotive industry.”

Mazour pointed out that it is “the first in the country’s history.”

He expected that this car would be in “demand,” given that his country wanted to target several markets.

“With this new vehicle, Morocco continues its transition towards electric and hybrid mobility, in line with the directives of King Mohammed VI, while making carbon-free manufacturing one of the cornerstones of the new industrial strategy,” Mezzour continued.

On Thursday, Tangier hosted a ceremony organized by the French group “Renault Morocco” to announce the manufacture of the first hybrid car bearing the “Made in Morocco” label.

According to the Ministry of Industry, the Kingdom has become “one of the most prominent car manufacturing countries, producing 700,000 vehicles annually.”

In June 2020, the French company Citroen announced the manufacture of the first electric car at its factory in the city of Kenitra, northwest of the Kingdom.

On December 21, 2020, Morocco unveiled a locally produced prototype electric car charging station.
