Gamesindustry.biz recently published an article regarding the best-selling physical format games in the UK. If FIFA is generally the game that sits on the top step of the podium, this year it’s Hogwarts Legacy which takes the cake.
Hogwarts Legacy is the best-selling physical game in the UK
Indeed, Avalanche Software’s game has attracted many players, making Hogwarts Legacy the best-selling physical game in the United Kingdom in 2023.
This is the first time in ten years that Electronic Arts and FIFA (now renamed EA Sports FC) have not topped the physical game sales chart in the territory. Only GTA 5 managed to remove the football simulation in 2013, and it is now Hogwarts Legacy which repeats the feat for the 2023 ranking.
Gamesindustry also specifies that dematerialized sales should allow EA Sports FC 24 to remain the best-selling game in the territory.
In total, 12.76 million physical video games were sold in the United Kingdom in 2023 according to GfK data, a drop of 5% compared to 2022.
A colossal success for Warner
Still according to Gamesindustry, physical sales of Hogwarts Legacy were made mainly on PS5, the Sony console representing more than half of the title’s sales this year.
The second largest platform was the PS4, followed by the Nintendo Switch, although the game was only released on the Nintendo console last November.
Hogwarts Legacy should also perform well outside the United Kingdom, particularly in the United States, since the title was at the top of the ranking of best-selling games in the USA last year at the end of November.
Even if Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III steals first place at the last minute, Warner Bros. can congratulate itself on having come to shake up the biggest video game franchises in 2023.
