For the first time: fear of a “mega earthquake” and a powerful tsunami in Japan

The Japan Meteorological Agency issued last night (8.8.24) a severe warning and the first of its kind ever against the danger of a “mega earthquake” along the coast of the Pacific Ocean. This is the first warning of its kind for the country. According to estimates, the earthquake experienced yesterday in the country, with a magnitude of 7.1, was only a prelude to what was to come.

According to the warning, which does not necessarily speak of an immediate danger in the coming days, the earthquake could reach magnitude 8 or even 9, which means that a fatal event would certainly occur if it occurred in a populated area, which could also lead to tsunami waves tens of meters high that would hit the land. It should be noted that there were no casualties in yesterday’s earthquake.

The Prime Minister of Japan, Fumio Kishida, canceled a work trip abroad in order to take part in situation assessments.
