Evolve was released by 2K in 2015 and was advertised as an asymmetrical multiplayer game in which players control up to four hunters or one monster that gradually gets stronger as the match progresses.
The game’s servers have been peer-to-peer since the beginning, and the game has been in the spotlight for a while thanks to some post-release DLC. In 2018, the game’s servers will be shut down early, with peer-to-peer connections still working, but other features will stop.
However, seemingly by accident, the Evolve servers were restored last night. People like SwingPoynt have tweeted the status of the Evolve server, which you can see below.
Considering that the servers came back online by accident, the question is: “What is 2K trying to do there?” Unfortunately, there is no answer. The servers are fully peer-to-peer this time around, and Evolve Stage 2 is the way players will be able to access the game.
However, various sources have confirmed that non-Stage 2 players will still be able to play with each other. However, if you do not purchase the game through a code merchant, you will not be able to purchase it. Only players who owned the game before it was removed from the store by Steam will be able to re-download and access it. The same can be said for PlayStation and Xbox users, as searching the respective stores yields no results other than buying a physical copy.
The return of Evolve also resulted in a slight increase in player numbers. According to Steam statistics, the number of players increased from 18 on July 20 to 136 on July 22. This statistic is confirmed Steam chartswhich at the time of writing reports 180 players.
