For Russia, Washington is “responsible for the escalation” of tensions in Ukraine

Russia took advantage of a meeting of the United Nations Security Council to denounce “hysteria” maintained, according to her, by the United States on the Ukrainian file. For the Washington Post, the confrontation between the two countries is one of the toughest in recent years.

“The United States and Russia are clashing harshly on the Ukrainian file”, announce the Washington Post. This Monday, January 31, the Russian ambassador to the United Nations, Vassili Nebenzia, angrily accused the Americans of provoking “an escalation” tensions in Ukraine. He claimed that the White House had put in power “real nazis” on the border with Russia, and that she wanted “Making heroes those who fought alongside Hitler”.

“You’re waiting [l’invasion de l’Ukraine], did he declare. It’s almost like you want your words to come true.” He was responding to US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, for whom Russia is currently seeking “an excuse” to invade Ukraine. According to her, Moscow wants “paint Ukraine and Westerners as aggressors”, in order to have a reason to attack the country.

On the sidelines of the meeting atHIM-HER-IT, the White House assured that an invasion of Ukraine would lead “quick and severe consequences”. The Kremlin, on the other hand, declared that the Americans were constantly “to stir up hysteria” on this file.

Difficult showdown

“This confrontation was one of the most difficult that we have seen in years within the international organization”, specifies the title. According to the United States, the threat of a Russian invasion of Ukraine is credible, if Western countries do not respond to Moscow’s demands for the demilitarization of the country and the withdrawal of NATO from the region. More than 100,000 Russian soldiers are currently massed on the Ukrainian border, recalls the American newspaper. The Russian authorities nevertheless announced that several thousand soldiers would soon be relocated, following the end of their training at the Ukrainian border.

For the Washington Post, “It is still too early to know whether [ces mouvements de troupes] will allow a de-escalation”. But diplomatic efforts continue, including outside the framework of the United Nations. “British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is expected to talk to Russian President Vladimir Putin, recounts the daily life of the capital. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will meet once more this week, following recent diplomatic talks collapsed. The Security Council of theHIM-HER-IT is due to resume discussions on the Ukrainian dossier on February 17.
