For LeBron James, Kevin Durant can become the top all-time scorer

In regarding fifteen games, LeBron James should beat Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s all-time scoring record. A huge feat that will further strengthen the legend of the King. But will a player be able to overtake LeBron in turn to take the throne? In the eyes of the main interested party, Kevin Durant has the means.

LeBron James and Kevin Durant have often been linked during their careers. Competing multiple times on the big NBA Finals stage over the past decade, and once once more leading the votes for the 2023 All-Star Game in their respective conference, the two monsters share great mutual respect. New proof with the King’s last statement, when Dave McMenamin forESPN asked him which player would be able to beat his new scoring record once he passed Abdul-Jabbar.

“KD immediately comes to mind. He is not nicknamed ‘Easy Money’ or the ‘Slim Reaper’ by chance. It’s so easy. His ability to shoot 3-pointers, mid-range, attack the racket, shoot 85-90% from the free throw line. These are key ingredients (to break the record).

But the most important thing is to remain available and to be on the ground. […] You need a bit of luck, health is the most important thing.”

Precisely, health is what might prevent Kevin Durant from rising as high as LeBron James in the hierarchy of the best scorers in history.

We know that KD has the talent to score 30 points every night, we know how much he loves basketball and no one can question his work ethic and his determination. On the other hand, stays in the infirmary tend to multiply for Durant. He has just been the victim of a sprained knee that will keep him away from the pitch for a month, he who had already missed six weeks of competition for a similar injury last year. Since his Achilles tendon rupture in the 2019 NBA Finals, Durant has played just 129 games in three and a half seasons (129 of 194).

Kevin Durant is today 14th all-time among scorers with 26,684 career points. An exceptional total, but KD would probably already be at 30,000 pawns without the various sores he experienced during his career. Points left on the way which inevitably weigh down the superstar of the Nets in the quest for such a record where longevity and durability are essential.

Knowing that Easy Money is now 34 years old, it looks complicated to go and nab LeBron one day, especially since we don’t know how far the other cyborg will go. James is still averaging 29 points at 38 brooms and is on his way to becoming the first player with over 40,000 career units! So good luck getting it huh. If we had to make predictions, we would bet more on a total in the 35,000 for KD at the end of his career, which would put him just behind the LeBron – Kareem – Karl Malone podium.

Where Kevin Durant can finish ahead of LeBron is in the career points-per-game standings. At the time of these lines, KD is fourth all-time with 27.28 points average. Right behind him? The King, with 27.18. Suffice to say that it is played for almost nothing…
