I wrote – Yasmine El-Sawy:
Dr. Waad Amin, Clinical Dietitian, said that there are some fruits that should not be eaten by diabetics, people who are more prone to diabetes due to genetic factors or those with prediabetes, and people with insulin resistance, especially those who are obese and overweight as well.
Amin added that these fruits should be eaten as much as possible, and include the following:
1- watermelon
Some people think that watermelon is a suitable fruit for the diet and is rich in water and can be eaten in any quantity at any time, but the fact is that the percentage of fiber in it is very low, as well as the glycemic index (i.e. its ability to raise the blood sugar level) is very high.
The therapeutic nutritionist advised the need to stay away from watermelon juice completely, because it contains a large amount of sugars, which enter the liver.
This does not mean completely abstaining from eating watermelon for patients with diabetes and insulin resistance, but it should be reduced, that is, getting one slice a day or eating it two days a week.
2- Pineapple
Some people think that pineapple is a fruit that works to lose weight and increase the rate of burning fat and calories, but it should be noted that it has a very high glycemic index, which is 72-75, and this is a high percentage.
And it is taken into account to completely avoid drinking juices, especially pineapple juice, because they are very rich in sugars and low in dietary fiber.
3- Banana
Amin pointed out that bananas are among the common fruits that are not suitable for diet and for patients with diabetes and insulin resistance, despite the low glycemic index of it, reaching only 50-55, and it does not raise blood sugar, but it is rich in carbohydrates and starches.
It is possible to eat only one banana, and not to increase the amount at all, because in this case it is equal to eating bread or a rice dish, for example.
4- mango
Despite the low glycemic index of mango, that is, 50 or more by a small percentage, in fact, it contains a high percentage of starches and a high percentage of sugars.
And you should refrain from adding sugar to the mango juice at all or eating the juice itself, while only one or two slices of mango can be eaten throughout the day, and not too much of it completely.
5- Dates
The therapeutic nutritionist explained that dates may not raise blood sugar because they contain fructose and not glucose, in addition to their low glycemic index, but the percentage of sugars is high, and it is not possible to eat more than one or two pieces as a natural food source.
