The Italians confirmed their progress by beating the French championship leaders in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals. No winner between English and German.
Lyon lost on the field of Juventus (2-1), Wednesday in Turin, in the quarter-final first leg of the Women’s Champions League, a very disappointing result for the Lyonnaises, who led 1-0 before putting themselves in trouble on their own. Arsenal, for its part, snatched the draw once morest Wolfsburg (1-1) in London.
The qualification will be played in the return match on March 31 at Groupama Stadium (9 p.m.), where OL will have to win by two goals to play the semi-finals.
In December 2020, in the round of 16 of the C1, OL had already suffered at Juventus Arena by winning 3-2 following being led 2-1.
This success of Juve, leader of Serie A, confirms both the progress of Italian women’s football and the Turin club in particular, but also the difficulties outside of OL, at the top of the French championship.
However, Olympique Lyonnais had put themselves in a favorable situation by taking the advantage from the 8e minute with a goal scored by the American Catarino Macario, who scored with a header following receiving a cross from Selma Bacha.
Carpenter expelled
Les Lyonnaises might have made it 2-0 before half-time by Melvine Malard who had won her duel with Juve’s French international goalkeeper Pauline Peyraud-Magnin before Cristiana Girelli saved her team on the line ( 34e).
Without being able to take cover, OL controlled the game until the justified exclusion of Australian defender Ellie Carpenter for a foul on Valentina Cernoia (63e) at the middle line which destabilized the Lyonnaises.
Shortly following, a shot from Cernoia hit the crossbar (64e), before Girelli equalized by taking advantage of a failed exit from Sarah Bouhaddi upon receiving a cross from the Danish Matilde Lundorf (71e). At the start of the game, Bouhaddi had already almost cost his team a goal following a recovery error by sending the ball over the back of Wendie Renard without the Swede Lina Hurtig taking advantage (2e).
At the end of the game, Agnese Bonfantini, barely entering the game in place of Girelli, and alerted in full swing by Arianna Caruso, offered the victory to Juve (83e).
Nine for Wassmuth
At the Emirates Stadium in London, home of the Gunners, the Germans of Wolfsburg, who played with Lia Wälti and Noelle Maritz, opened the scoring by Tabea Wassmuth (19th). It is her ninth goal this season in the Champions League, where she leads the scoring charts. But the English, very combative, equalized in the 89th minute by Carlotte Wubben-Moy.
